Happy music

For this assignment I debated about using the emotion “inspiring” since the songs I find that make me happy, pumped, or just plain emotional I find them to also be inspiring. So I decided to just go with happy to narrow it down.

The first song is called Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The lyrics are fun and the best bit in my opinion is the little dialog the duet have towards the end. It’s just a good human story that creates almost an admiration for the two singers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHEOF_rcND8

Another song that makes me happy is Ragged Wood by Fleet Foxes. It makes me want to take a country drive with the windows down. It simply makes me want go out and experience life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Qg5bVGOqc

Lastly is Crosses by Jose Gonzalez. I think a big reason I enjoy this song is because it is from a video game I play called “Life is Strange”. Hearing it transforms me back to this virtual world full of mystery and human relationships. I played this game during the midst of my divorce and it was a beautiful escape for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfN2rN9P3CI

Nonhuman Perspective

Some people sprayed me the other day. It left a mark. They were chased away by flashing lights before they could finish. I enjoyed their company and I hope they will come back to visit me again. It was nice not feeling forgotten in this dark alley. Why were they chased off? Were they doing something wrong? They seemed to be having fun and it was the most fun I’d had in a long time. They had a box that they placed on the asphalt. When they pushed it’s button, music broke out of it so loud that it startled me. It was music I had never heard before. The rhythm was fast and if I had feet, they would be tapping along. Their laughter and smiles as they sprayed me warmed this old concrete. I hope they remember me.

Summary week 2

At first I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this weeks topic on copyright, but I ended up really liking it. The articles I read were great along with the documentary. They covered this very important and often misunderstood topic. I also very much enjoyed the freedom to chose what projects we worked on and it was an added bonus to tie these little projects together with a theme. I am looking forward to next weeks tasks!

Here is my post on copyright.

And finally, my “Splash” projects.

Splash Mini Projects

This week I decided I would watch the 1984 movie “Splash” which I had never seen before. This first little project is the letter Allen would have found on his front door if Madison had just left while he was out.

I also made a music video for the movie. I looked up to see what songs came out the same year as the movie (1984) and believe I found the perfect one.

Finally, I made a gif using a clip from the movie. It is a Myers Briggs personality type joke.

Show Your Work

I just read a great article by Austin Kleon. I absolutely love the idea of sharing your process with the world. I am one of those people who want to know the little details of what went into creating whatever is being created. We often dismiss the little things and only focus on the big (like the end product) as if that is the most important thing to come out of it, but really it is the process that is most important. The product is just a mere representation of what the process produced. To me, the process is the real treasure. It is the part of the story that is going to be the most raw and genuine.

A couple years ago I wrote a children’s book. I found myself an illustrator(a friend) and I made a plan on how I was going to promote my book. I absolutely did not want my posts to be all about “Buy my book!” instead I wanted to share the behind the scenes of what went into creating it. I wanted to share my experience raw and unfiltered so that others could distantly live that part of my life along side me. I never did publish it and it still remains remains to be illustrated. But maybe with what I am learning in my courses, I can someday finish what I started and make it better than the original plan.

Review of “Everything is a Remix”

I really enjoyed this documentary and would say I have to agree. Regarding my earlier post on copyright, I did not realize at the time of writing (a couple hours ago) that copyright meant that companies and corporations were basically doing a complete lock down on anything of theirs. Which is hypocritical since they themselves stole good ideas to to turn around and say no one else can steal their good ideas. I do believe in the phrase that was used in the documentary that creativity is built on inspiration. We are all people on this earth who have similar experiences and will produce similar work. And when we build our ideas on top of others ideas; that is how we grow and evolve. That is partially why I like film so much, because they are taking all these different components and interweaving them into it’s own work of art. And if a different director were to get a hold of the same thing and change it to how he sees it; it will speak to those who can relate to him and disgust those who relate more to the original. Though I tend to like ‘Originals’ more than remakes; but sometimes the remakes will surprise you and become better than the original.

One thing that I don’t think the documentary covered was fan fiction/art. This may be off topic, but I recently learned that the writer of a comic(based on a video game) I am reading, was hired by the company after seeing her fan art of that video game. I have heard that more and more companies are hiring their fans because they will invest in the job.

So in order for us to proceed with digital storytelling in this class, we are going to have to give credit where credit is due or do our best to make our remix work as ‘original’ as we possibly can.

Copyright and Digital Editing

I read through the article titled “How Mickey Mouse Keeps Changing Copyright Law” and I found it to be pretty interesting. Though the article doesn’t mention it, it makes me wonder if that is why Disney is remaking all of their movies to extend their copyright even more. Some may think it’s not fair, but I don’t see how it’s not. Disney is only preserving their property for generations to come. If I created something for my family line, I’d want them to have all the rights to it.https://alj.artrepreneur.com/mickey-mouse-keeps-changing-copyright-law/

The other article I read was about how National Geographic edited some of their photos to fit the cover of their magazine better. I do like that they try to ensure that their photos are raw and real, but it doesn’t really bother me that they made a couple of them fit the cover better as long as they go ahead and print the original somewhere within the issue. https://petapixel.com/2016/07/04/nat-geo-says-committed-honest-photos-era-photoshop/

Summary week 1

I am excited to delve deep into the 80’s for this semester. I feel it will provide amazing inspiration for the work we will be doing. I love the idea of taking the old to create new. It is a good way to incorporate and remember this decade.

For my daily create I decided to draw while watching the music video for “Everybody want to rule the world” by Tears for Fears. https://twitter.com/shealanclark/status/1167524641503612928?s=20

My 1980’s Story

A little girl was waiting for dinner at the dining room table when tragedy occurred. She discovered that balancing on the hind legs of her chair was very entertaining when she pushed herself too far and her 2 year old fingers lacked the strength to pull her back to safety. The dining room had a hard tile floor and a newly installed sliding glass door. As she fell back, her head went through the glass door and found herself staring up at the jagged glass that looked as if it could crumble down any moment. She was quickly rescued by her mother who gently lifted her head and slowly pulled her out. The little girl was snugly wrapped in her blanket and was caressed in her mothers arms on the passenger side of the car as her father drove them to the hospital. The doctor gave her a shot to deaden the pain before he started stitching but didn’t wait long enough for the medicine to kick in. After the stitches, her head was wrapped in a big bandage that pushed her ears down. She has the scar from that accident to this day. That little girl is me and this is my first and only memory of the 1980’s.

1980’s Storytelling

I am a very visual person so I naturally gravitate towards movies. The 80’s movies that impacted me the most were the ones in the fantasy, sci-fi and horror genre. They intrigued and fascinated me and got me to wonder how these movies were created/constructed. Movies like Legend, Poltergeist, and Star Wars. These were the stories that I wanted to know more about.

Another form of storytelling in the 80’s that inspires me is Jamie Livingston-the man who took a Polaroid everyday. It is much more raw and intimate and I really appreciate that. Here is a link to some of his work. https://www.boredpanda.com/polaroid-photo-every-day-jamie-livingston/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic
